Intel: 'Wii 2 won't have hand controllers'
Leading microchip manufacturer Intel believes Nintendo's successor to the best-selling Wii console won't come with hand controllers.
"We imagine some future generation of [Nintendo's] Wii won't have hand controllers," said Justin Rattner, the company's chief technology officer.
"You just set up the cameras around the room and wave your hand like you're playing tennis."
Intel has been speaking to Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo regarding what chips might power the next round of consoles. According to Business Week, the firm is keen not to miss the opportunity to get involved in the next generations of games systems after it was beaten to it by IBM for the current models.
Intel claims its newly developed microchips are capable of 1 trillion calculations per second. This is far in advance of the current IBM Cell processor, which is only capable of running at around 256 million calculations per second.
I know microsoft was working with real tennis rackets and golf clubs and trying to make it "real feeling" but this camera stuff sounds kinda cool as well.

I'm still hoping that the "one console future" (in which there is only one console standard and everyone's games will run on it, much like a DVD player) happens sooner rather than later. One console that runs everything, and competition from multiple manufacturers would bring hardware prices down pretty quickly.
There have been a number of articles on it lately, and everyone agrees that the current model of multimillion dollar games taking several years to develop is not sustainable unless the developers are able to widen the customer base, and making multiple versions for multiple consoles is not the answer as it takes even more time and money. Games should not cost $60.00, either...one standard would help bring that price down and expand the number of games that would find their way into homes.
I'm sure we're still a couple of generations away from this, but if it's as inevitable as it seems, I for one can't wait for it to happen. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo...I don't care who makes what, I just want to be able to play the games.

I suppose there's always hope, especially since Wii and 360 are kicking PS3's ass, but even as recent as the last generation GameCube was getting stomped and came back huge with the Wii. It seems the only times that consoles fail are when studios over-extend themselves, starting as far back as Atari, hitting things like the insanely over-priced 3DO and Neo Geo, and continuing to some of the recent "new" hand-helds trying to compete with Game Boy and PSP.
Sony's not quite at that level yet, so I think the 3 big companies we have now are going to continue unless one of them is bought by another. Now that Wii is a success, it's unlikely Nintendo with go with game development only, as they probably would have done had Wii tanked.

I don't see how the camera thing will possibly work unless you are wearing some sort of detection suit or jacket.. or something. Only one person will be able to be in the room while playing.

I've heard about that, though mostly through a professor I had during my first session. From what I've heard, all you have to do is put on a headband-type device, and voila, you can play! May have changed by now (last time I had talked with her was back around September) though it sounds promising, and might not be too far off.
This really impresses me, not simply because of -how- it will change games, but rather -who- will play games. We get excited looking into the future of gaming, but countless individuals who suffer from paralysis or other such physical conditions will now be able to play games freely. Those who have such limited physical control will likely jump on this like wildfire, and rightfully so. I'd love to see this technology coming around and bring some joy to people who have given up on many of their hobbies due to physical disabilities.

I want to play battlefield with that. You would need a big room though.

OHHH I don't know how this is going to work out. LOL. I'd personally like to see Charles Manson wearing one of these headbands playing "The Sims". That'd be cool to watch.
I hope they come out with one of these for PC, as well. Imagine what new levels hacking will be taken to.
To be honest, this will possibly cause more and more people to have the famous "WoW" gaming addiction except a higher number and a more severe degree.
What about in Two Player mode. Two kids sitting on the couch playing .. now they don't even have to use their arms. The future is very clear... zillions of MONGOLOID kids with tiny arms and legs.
Nevertheless, You thought getting the first few versions of VOICE recognition was tough to set up? Wait till you get your hands on one of these little boogers.
